A couple in Nadia district of West Bengal was lynched by a mob on Saturday morning, following accusations that they had kidnapped and murdered the eight-year-old son of a neighbor, according to police reports.
The Class 3 student was reported missing on Friday afternoon after he went out to play. His body was discovered in a swamp in the vicinity early Saturday. Local residents, suspecting foul play, afterward attacked the couple and their family, resulting in injuries to another woman.
Police have identified the deceased as Utpal biswas, 45, and his wife, Soma Biswas, 38. The injured woman is reportedly a relative of the couple.
according to an officer at Tehatta police station, “The child’s body was recovered from a swamp in the area. A tarpaulin was lying near the body. Following this a mob attacked the house of Biswas. The house was ransacked and set on fire. Biswas was beaten up. When his wife tried to rescue him, she was also beaten up. The couple was rushed to the hospital, where they were declared dead.”
Authorities have sent the three bodies for post-mortem examinations. The police have not yet determined whether the child was murdered.
“Inquiry is going on. We are waiting for the autopsy report,” said the official.
