It all started with a pizza evening … Since 2023, one Friday a month, the Ligue’s Bas-Rhin Committee against Cancer is organizing a pizza evening for young people with cancer. These evenings allow adolescents and young adults affected by the disease to exchange, to share their doubts, their apprehensions and their experiences. “But there are those who cannot move,” notes Julie Daul, psychologist, “hence the idea of the podcast”. Of which act! The very first podcast in France dedicated to cancers of young people and carried by those affected by it was born. “Onco’ose”, contraction of the words oncology and daring, they are twelve episodes of 30 to 50 minutes where Yuri, Gina, Bilal and Ginny deliver their testimonies, their fears, their experiences.
These young adults – they are all between 25 and 34 years old – have suffered or still suffer from cancer. Too often when you are young “you don’t feel concerned [par le cancer] “Says Ginny. According to a study by public health France, between 2000 and 2020, 54,735 cases of cancers were diagnosed with patients between 15 and 39 years.
The podcast for therapy
“The basic podcast is a format that I like and I wanted to show that there are young people [qui sont touchés] And that we can help each other and be happy, ”says Bilal. For Ginny, in remission since 2017, these programs are “like a therapy. It forces you to get back into it, to put the words on that ”. “We are different, but we understand ourselves and we must remember that there is one after,” she continues. The themes of the episodes, such as self-esteem or the resumption of studies, were chosen after a study by the Bas-Rhin committee with young people in the department: “These are their concerns”, underlines Pascale Blaise, director of the Bas-Rhine committee of the Cancer League. With each episode, a professional in the medical or paramedical world intervenes. The episodes will be published every first Tuesday of the month in audio version on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Deezer platforms and on video on YouTube. The first episode of the season will be broadcast on Tuesday September 2.
