Everything to know as first photos are unveiled

The director of the surprise horror hit Barbarian (2022) is back with a spooky new movie.

Weapons is a mystery-horror film directed by Zach Cregger that tells the story of school kids who all disappear from their homes at the exact same time. Cast members include Julia Garner and Josh Brolinand first-look photos were officially unveiled by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures on July 21. Read on for everything to know about Weapons.

What’s the plot?

“When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night and at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance,” says the official logline. The innocent teacher ends up taking the brunt of the blame from the angry and confused parents. But everyone’s heart is the right place as they collectively wonder what happened to the kids.

Who’s in the cast?

Brolin leads the ensemble as Archer Graff, the father of one of the missing children. Garner plays Justine Gandy, the teacher who finds out that almost all of her students have disappeared. Alden honorable takes on the role of Paul Morgan, a police officer with a past history with Justine. Austin Abrams is Anthony, a drug addict and thief. Cary Christopher plays Alex Lilly, the only child from Justine’s class who did not vanish. Benedict Wong inhabits the role of Marcus, the school principal. Other cast members include Amy Madigan, June Diane Raphael, Clayton Farris, Whitmer Thomas, Callie Schuttera, Toby Hussand Luke Speakman.

Zach Cregger wrote and directed Weaponsand also produced it alongside Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, J.D. Lifshitzand Raphael Marguleswith Michelle Morrissey and Josh Brolin executive producing. Artisans include director of photography Larkin Seipleproduction designer Tom Hammockeditor Joe Murphycostume designer Trish Summervilleand music composers Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladayand Cregger.

What is the release date?

Mark your calendars for Aug. 8, as that’s when Weapons will hit theaters in the United States. It was originally supposed to debut on Jan. 16, 2026, but was bumped up on the calendar back in March.

The first trailer for Weapons dropped on April 29. “This is a true story that happened in my town,” begins the voice of one of the school kids. Miss Gandy arrives at school on a normal Wednesday, only to find that all of her students are missing. As it turns out, they all woke up at 2:17 a.m. the night before and walked into the darkness, never to be seen again. The teacher immediately faces blame from irate parents, including Archer Graff, who demands to know why it’s only “her classroom” that was affected.
