To mark the centenary of the first surrealist manifesto, the Centre for Studies and Research of the Picasso Málaga Museum (MPM) is hosting the International Seminar ‘Surrealism and its double’. This event will gather experts to discuss modern perspectives on the surrealist movement. Discussions will focus on surrealism’s global influence, its connections to various fields and cultures, and its relevance in today’s art world.
The seminar, scheduled for Wednesdays in October, is part of the Picasso Málaga Museum’s new research direction focusing on surrealism, which began with the ‘Óscar domínguez’ exhibition. The seminar will begin with a day dedicated to this key figure in Spanish surrealism and will conclude with an American perspective on the surrealist Picasso.
Led by Eugenio Carmona, a professor at the university of malaga, and Dr. Miguel López-Remiro, artistic director of the Picasso Málaga Museum, the seminar aims to provide a complete and critical examination of surrealism. It will highlight its international nature and its capacity to inspire new interpretations in the present day.
“This seminar thus proposes a critical and plural review of surrealism, emphasizing its cross-border character and its potential to generate new readings from the present.”
Speakers will include Daniel Maximin, a writer and poet from Guadalupe and former literary director of the Ministry of Culture of France, who will share insights on Caribbean identity. María Elena Ortiz, curator of contemporary art at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (texas, USA), will also contribute perspectives that broaden the past understanding of the movement.
The seminar will also feature art historians such as Michael Fitzgerald, Emmanuel Guigon, and Neil Cox, whose research has significantly updated the study of surrealism in recent years.
In addition to examining the evolution of surrealism, the seminar will focus on the relationship between Pablo Picasso and the movement.
The seminar will explore the tensions, connections, and shifts that characterized this relationship over time. This analysis is part of the research efforts of the Center for Studies and Research of the Picasso Málaga Museum, supported by the Unicaja Foundation, which seeks to promote critical thinking about Picasso and his context, reinforcing its position as a research center and platform for debate on artistic modernity.
Registration for the International Seminar is free and can be done by reserving a spot via seminariosurrealismo@mpiasom.org. ‘Surrealism and its double’ is open to anyone interested in surrealism and its contemporary expressions, nonetheless of their background or specialization.
Furthermore, in collaboration with the University of Malaga, students can earn 0.5 ECTS university credits by attending four of the five days of the program.
