The Tigers (53-15) swept the Chanticleers (56-13) in a two-game series. Coastal Carolina, who entered the finals on a 26-game win streak, saw coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt schilling ejected early in the game.
This victory marks the Southeastern Conference’s sixth consecutive national title in baseball and 11th in the last 16 years. It is LSU’s eighth title placing them second behind Southern California’s 12.
Tigers coach Jay Johnson achieved a milestone, becoming the first Division I coach to win two titles in his first four years at a school. “Our whole motto for the year was ‘Tough And Together,’ and that’s what they did from Aug. 26 until now,” Johnson said in a postgame television interview. “It’s only 12 returning players. That collection of talent became a team and a family.”
Coastal Carolina, who won the national title in 2016, aimed to be the first team since 1962 (Michigan) to win the championship in their first two CWS appearances.
With five-time champion coach Skip Bertman in attendance, LSU tied the game at 1 in the third inning with an RBI double by Ethan Frey and took a 5-1 lead in the fourth with two-run singles from Chris Stanfield and Derek Curiel.
Coastal Carolina narrowed the gap to 5-3 in the seventh inning against LSU starter Anthony Eyanson after Wells Sykes hit his fourth home run of the season.
Chase Shores then made his fourth appearance of the CWS, reaching 100 mph with his fastball. He retired the first five batters he faced before Dean Mihos singled in the ninth.Shores then struck out Ty Dooley and secured the win with a game-ending double play by Sykes.
The Chanticleers had a 15-game winning streak when Jacob Morrison (12-1) started. His 3⅔ innings marked his shortest start of the season, and the five runs against him were his highest allowed.
LSU entered the game with a 13-game winning streak when either Kade Anderson or Anthony eyanson started.
Kade Anderson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the CWS after allowing one run and six hits, striking out 17 in 16 innings over two starts. Anthony Eyanson (12-2) pitched 6⅓ innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out nine.
Kevin Schnall, in his first year as head coach, was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. Matt Schilling was also ejected for comments made during the confrontation with umpires.
Walker Mitchell was at bat with two outs and Sebastian Alexander had just stolen second base when Kevin Schnall gestured at plate umpire Angel Campos and began shouting, leading to his ejection.
