The moon, Earth’s only natural satellite, is gradually moving away from our planet each year, a phenomenon confirmed by scientific research from various space agencies, including the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO).

This subtle but persistent movement sees the moon drifting approximately 3.8 centimeters (around 1.5 inches) away from Earth annually. This is primarily due to the tidal forces generated by the gravitational interaction between the two celestial bodies.

The gravitational dance causes Earth’s rotation to slow down incrementally. Consequently,the angular momentum lost by Earth is transferred to the moon,propelling it further away over vast stretches of time.

This lunar recession was first definitively proven using retro-reflector laser technology deployed by Apollo mission astronauts on the moon’s surface. By precisely measuring the time it takes for laser beams to bounce back from these reflectors, scientists can determine the Earth-moon distance with millimeter accuracy.
