the second annual Virginia Black Film Festival is set to commence this Thursday in Hampton, VA, showcasing a diverse array of cinematic works and industry-focused events. The festival will feature over 50 movies and documentaries, along with discussions about filmmaking and interactive workshops.

The festival kicks off with a juneteenth Beach Party at the Paradise Ocean Club and a concert at fort Monroe on Thursday. A Black business expo will be held Saturday and sunday at The American Theater.

Screenings, scheduled from Friday through Sunday, will include comedies, holiday movies, and documentaries like “33 Black Frog: An American Story,” which chronicles the experiences of one of the frist african American men to join the Navy’s Underwater Demolition team, a precursor to the SEALs.

Screenings will take place at The American Theatre, located at 125 E. Mellon St., as well as at Hampton University’s student union and Ogden Hall. The campus main gate is situated at the corner of Tyler and East Queen Streets.

Honorees and Events

Norfolk native Tim Reid, a producer and actor known for his work in the TV series “Sister, Sister” and “WKRP in cincinnati,” is one of three honorees.

Clifton Powell, recognized for his acting and directing work including the movie “Ray,” and BK Fulton, a Hampton native who works in film and stage, will also be honored.

Ticket prices begin at $30, with day packages available for $75 and weekend passes for $250. A three-hour stage combat course is offered for $100.
