Apple has officially added the iPhone XS to its list of vintage products. The device,which was released in 2018 alongside the iPhone XS Max,now faces limited support from the company.

According to Apple’s policy, a product is classified as vintage five years after the company ceases its distribution for sale. while technical assistance remains a possibility at this stage, it is contingent on the availability of spare parts.

The iPhone XS joins the vintage list nearly a year after the iPhone XS Max, which was added in November 2024. This difference is attributed to the XS model’s slightly extended availability through third-party retailers. While the XS Max quickly disappeared from the market, the standard XS model lingered at some retailers even after being removed from Apple’s official channels a year post-launch.

Limited Lifespan

Apple adheres to a specific timeline for classifying its devices. After five years, a product is deemed vintage, and after seven years, it becomes obsolete. Upon reaching obsolescence, Apple discontinues all forms of support, regardless of spare parts availability.

The iPhone XS will reach this stage in 2027. Until then,owners can still seek official repairs-for batteries,displays,or other components-through Apple Stores or authorized service providers. However, this is not guaranteed, as Apple may decline service if the necessary parts are unavailable.

The iPhone XS will reach obsolescence in 2027, at which point apple will cease all support.

An Incremental Upgrade

Launched in September 2018 as the successor to the iPhone X, the iPhone XS offered incremental improvements rather than a complete overhaul. Key enhancements included:

• The A12 Bionic processor, offering improved efficiency and speed
• Enhanced cameras with better dynamic range
• Dual SIM support (Nano SIM + Esim)

the design and user experience remained largely unchanged from the iPhone X. The iPhone XS Max, introduced alongside the XS, featured a larger 6.5-inch screen,foreshadowing the trend toward larger displays.

End of Software Updates

The iPhone XS will not be compatible with iOS 26, which was unveiled at WWDC 2025. The device’s software update cycle concluded in 2024 with iOS 17 as its final supported version.

The iPhone XS will not receive iOS 18 or subsequent versions, including those with the new numbering system introduced by Apple in 2025. This means the device is officially outside the cycle of updates, both for new features and security patches.

Users who continue to use the iPhone XS should be aware of potential compatibility issues with newer apps and possible security vulnerabilities. Those who heavily rely on their iPhones for daily tasks such as email, banking, two-factor authentication, and photo storage may want to consider upgrading to a more recent model, either new or refurbished.
