Protests Emerge in Venice Ahead of Jeff Bezos Wedding

Billionaire’s upcoming nuptials draw criticism over potential disruption and privatization concerns.

A banner featuring teh name of the founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, appeared crossed out with a Red Cross on a bell tower in Venice. The banner protested his wedding, planned for late June, according to the AFP Agency.

The American billionaire, 61, and his fiancee, The journalist Lauren Sánchez, are set to celebrate their marriage in the Italian city between June 24 and 26.

The collective “no Space for Bezos” claimed responsibility, stating “It is not welcome in Venice or anywhere,” in a Facebook post. The group hung the banner, which was later removed, and distributed posters and stickers calling for a demonstration against the event.

George Clooney’s wedding in 2014 also took place in Venice.

“Venice is a living city, not a place that is rented at the best price,” the protesting group emphasized on social media.

Venice Divided Over Wedding

“Venice is a living city, not a place that is rented at the best price,”

the mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, previously celebrated the couple’s decision to marry in Venice, telling the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera in March that the wedding would generate important economic benefits.

The City Council assured that the event would only gather 200 guests and cause “no disturbance” to the city.

Though, the Italian press reports that five hotels and a large number of gondolas have been reserved, along with a port for Bezos’ yacht.

The detractors of the event denounce the privatization of a part of the city, which is already struggling with mass tourism.
