Japan Seeks Tariff Relief in US Trade Talks Ahead of G7 Summit

Tokyo aims to resolve trade disputes before leaders meet in June.

Japan is actively engaged in discussions with U.S. officials to alleviate tariffs that are negatively impacting its economy, according to Tokyo’s chief tariff negotiator.

Ryosei Akazawa stated in WASHINGTON on Friday that, “Tariffs have already been imposed on autos, auto parts, steel and aluminum, and some of them have doubled to 50% along with 10% general tariff. these are causing daily losses to Japan’s economy.” Akazawa’s remarks followed talks with officials including Treasury Secretary Scott bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

While Akazawa refrained from detailing the progress made, these discussions represent a critical effort to resolve trade tensions between the two nations.

This round of negotiations could be the last face-to-face meeting between senior Japanese and U.S. representatives before the Group of Seven (G7) leaders summit commencing on June 15. It is indeed anticipated that U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the summit.

Japan is also contending with a potential 24% tariff rate slated to begin in July, unless an agreement can be reached with Washington.

“we want an agreement as soon as possible. The G7 summit is on our radar, and if our leaders meet, we want to show what progress has been made,” akazawa commented. “Still we must balance urgency with a need to guard our national interests,” he added.

Last month, Japan’s trade representative suggested that U.S. defense equipment acquisitions, collaboration on shipbuilding technology, revisions to automobile import regulations, and increased agricultural imports could serve as negotiating tools in the tariff discussions.

Reportedly, Japan has proposed a mechanism to lower auto tariff rates based on countries’ contributions to the U.S.automotive sector, signaling a willingness to compromise.

Akazawa reiterated that Japan’s stance remains firm: the existing tariffs are unacceptable.

“Tariffs have already been imposed on autos, auto parts, steel and aluminum… These are causing daily losses to Japan’s economy.”
