A thorough documentary, It’s Never Over: Jeff buckley, chronicling the life and music of the late singer-songwriter, is slated for release in U.S. cinemas on august 8. Following the theatrical run, it will be available on HBO and HBO Max as part of the Music Box series. Amy Berg, acclaimed for her work on West of Memphis and Deliver Us From Evil, which investigated sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, directed the film.

It’s Never Over, which debuted at Sundance earlier this year, features interviews with key figures in Buckley’s life, including his mother, mary Guibert, bandmates Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred, former partners Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser, and fellow musicians Aimee Mann and Ben Harper.

Buckley’s Rise and untimely Death

Jeff Buckley, son of the late British folk artist Tim Buckley, garnered notable acclaim during his brief but impactful career.His life was cut short by an accidental drowning in Memphis in 1997, at the age of 30. He initially gained recognition for his intimate performances at New York City venues like Sin-é, and his album Grace, released by Columbia Records, is considered a seminal debut.

buckley once explained that his passion for solo performance was inspired by blues musicians Robert Johnson and Son House,recalling their raw “barrel house” shows. “It was just the singer, his voice, the guitar and this tiny shack,” he said, emphasizing the importance of creating “big magic in a really small place.”

Director’s Vision and Production

Berg stated that making this film, which offers an intimate portrayal of a remarkable singer and songwriter, has been a career-long endeavor. She expressed enthusiasm for partnering with Magnolia and HBO to share Buckley’s story with both longtime fans and new listeners.

It’s Never Over is produced by Berg, Ryan Heller, Christone Connor, Mandy Chang, Matthew Roozen, and Jennie Bedusa. Brad Pitt serves as one of the executive producers, having previously approached Guibert about a potential biopic of her son.

Tighe noted that Buckley’s emotionally resonant singing style is rare, comparing him to contemporary artists like Billie Eilish and Frank Ocean.”He was ultra-romantic,” Tighe said.
