Alf Clausen, Longtime Composer for ‘The Simpsons,’ Dies at 84

Alf Clausen, the composer who crafted the musical landscape of The Simpsons for nearly three decades, has passed away at the age of 84. He scored over 560 episodes, leaving an indelible mark on the iconic animated series.

Clausen’s death follows a ten-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare brain disorder.

A celebrated composer, Clausen won two Emmy Awards and received 30 nominations for his work on The Simpsons. For 27 years, he composed original scores each week, brought to life by a 35-piece orchestra.

In 2017, Clausen was let go from The Simpsons in what was described as a cost-cutting measure by Fox. He later filed a lawsuit alleging ageism and disability discrimination, which he later dropped. The show recognized his contributions by naming him “composer emeritus” in later seasons.

“I think that’s one of the reasons they’ve kept me all these years: they were looking for somebody who could score all those different types of music in small clip-form,” Clausen reflected in a 2017 interview. “That’s what’s been fun for me. I think that anyone else who would have been hired for this job and stayed for this long would have gone to the nuthouse.”

A Legacy Beyond Springfield

Beyond his work on The Simpsons, clausen also composed music for the television series ALF and contributed to the soundtracks of films such as The Naked Gun,Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,and Weird science.
