MEPs Urge European Commission to Support Budapest Pride Amidst Controversy

Sixty Members of the European Parliament have voiced their concerns over alleged pressure on commissioners to avoid Budapest Pride, calling for a strong stance against discrimination.

A group of 60 MEPs from the European Parliament has penned an open letter expressing “profound disappointment and concern” over reports that the President of the European Commission discouraged commissioners from attending Budapest Pride this year. The letter follows reports that the President of the European Commission explicitly requested commissioners not to attend the Budapest parade, allegedly to avoid provoking Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

According to Euractiv, one source suggested the intention was to avoid giving the Hungarian government ammunition to accuse the “alienated Brussels elite” of “moral lessons.”

In response, the European Commission stated on Tuesday that the allegations that the President of the European Commission or his team had asked the board to not participate in Budapest Pride were unfounded.

MEPs Demand Decisive Action

The MEPs’ letter to Ursula von der Leyen, also published on Euroactiv, highlights the “Hungarian government has been campaigning for years against the LGBTIQ+ community, which has now peaked in the ban on Pride in Budapest.” The letter asserts that “This ban violates EU law and the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights” and undermines these rights “not only in Hungary but throughout Europe.”

“the Hungarian government has been campaigning for years against the LGBTIQ+ community, which has now peaked in the ban on Pride in Budapest.”

The MEPs urged the European Commission to take a “decisive stand,” arguing that failing to do so would mean the Commission is not fulfilling its duty. They emphasized that “the EU cannot listen to infringements and does not retreat from the fear of conflict with the Hungarian government.”

The letter concludes with a call for visible EU presence at Pride in Budapest, stating it is “more important than ever to see that the LGBTIQ+ community, civil society, human rights protectors and everyone who believes in freedom and human dignity see that the European Union is truly ally-not only in words.”
