Eva Wildi-CortésNew Fedpol boss warns of conditions as in Sweden
Combating organized crime is one of the focus of the new director of the Federal office for Police,Eva Wildi-Cortés. And there is an urgent need for action.
-
Eva Wildi-Cortés is currently working on a strategy and an action plan in the fight against organized crime in Switzerland.
-
In an interview, the new Fedpol boss says that Switzerland must act.
-
Otherwise, there would be conditions as in other European countries.
In Sweden, gang crime has developed into a major problem. “We are in an acute and national crisis in which children are used by adults as soldiers,” said Magdalena Andersson, former Prime Minister of Sweden and party leader of the Social Democrats, to the gangs in September last year. The overall situation cannot be compared to that here in switzerland. But Eva Wildi-Cortés, director of the Federal Office for Police (Fedpol) since February, warns in an interview with the “NZZ am Sonntag”: “If we do not want to shoot shooting and road fights as in the Netherlands, Belgium or Sweden, Switzerland has to act now.”
In Switzerland, criminal clans would use barbershops, travel agencies or bubble-tea shops to wash money. In particular, Wildi-Corté’s groups such as the Italian ‘ndrangheta and Albanian clans, but also the Mocro-Mafia from the Netherlands or the Nigerian Black Ax. “Switzerland is very attractive for these groups,” says Wildi-Cortés and calls the strong francs, the high purchasing power and political stability as reasons for this.
On behalf of Justice minister Beat Jans, Fedpol boss will work a national strategy to combat organized crime by the end of the year. There will also be an “action plan with very specific measures”.The aim is to recognize the “organized crime throughout Switzerland faster”, to “act more and more to do and work even more closely together”. Wildi-Cortés also brings a taboo break into play, the so-called reversal of the burden of proof. This would mean that the owners of dubious money will have to prove in the future that it comes from legal sources. “If you do not provide this proof, the money will be drawn in and flows into the state treasury,” said the new fedpol boss.
Nevertheless, the fight against terrorism remains a priority, assures Wildi-Cortés. Here «the greatest danger is not at the moment. We worried that radicalized people are getting younger and the radicalization happens more and more quickly and behind closed doors in the children’s room ».
