(Daejeon = Yonhap News) Reporter Park Joo -young = Dr. Lee Mi -ok, a team of Korea Biotechnology Research Institute, announced on the 15th that he developed the ‘IalvassemB’, which collaborated with Dr. Kim Jung -hyun, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The lungs of our body are directly contacted with external air and are first exposed to harmful substances such as viruses, bacteria and fine dust.
The epithelial cells of the alveolar (lungs) and macrophages (immune cells that eat external pathogens) cooperate with each other as the primary defense and are responsible for the initial immune response.
Although research on animal models such as mice is mainly attempted to reveal interaction and immune function between cells, it was difficult to check the immune response of the human lungs due to physiological differences between humans and animals.
In addition, the existing waste organoid (artificial organs made based on human -derived stem cells) did not contain immune cells, so there was a limit to reproducing the complex immune environment of the lungs.
The research team cultivated the alveolar epithelial cells and macrophages derived from human stem cells to create alveolar assemblies, an artificial alveoli tissue that can reproduce the structure and immune response of the human lungs.
The best culture for the joint culture of the two cell groups has been designed to maintain stable interaction between cells.
It is the first platform to reproduce the in vivo reaction in the lab, and it is possible to elaborate the functions performed by the actual alveolar macrophages, such as damaging epithelial cells and tuberculosis infection immune response.
The research team uses the developed alveolar assemblord for the actual severe corona virus infection and high -risk avian influenza research. The National Full -off Support Center uses the alveolar assembled to the effectiveness of the respiratory virus (corona 19 virus, influenza) treated substances discovered by industry, academia and research.
Dr. Lee said, “The absence of immune cells has been pointed out as a limit in organoid studies, and this study has developed a new 3D research platform for the study of lung damage and infectious diseases.”
This study was published online on the 9th of last month, Nature Communications.
