Pohang City is off to a remarkable start at the 63rd Gyeongbuk Provincial Sports Competition, igniting hopes for a championship title.The city’s athletes have showcased remarkable skill and determination,securing victories in multiple events and positioning themselves as strong contenders in the overall standings.
Early Triumphs in Key Events
Before the official opening ceremony, Pohang demonstrated its athletic prowess by clinching victories in five key events. These included dominant performances in:
- Basketball
- Handball
- Cycling
- Shooting
- golf
Furthermore, Pohang’s youth teams displayed considerable talent, securing second place in the boys’ high school division for Hapkido, Judo, and Bowling, adding to the city’s impressive early performance.
Soccer Teams Advance with Decisive Wins
The soccer teams representing Pohang City have also made a notable impact at the competition.In a high school match held at Gimcheon Health College Stadium, Pohang Jecheol High School, representing Pohang, delivered a resounding 6-0 victory against Yale Meditech High School from Andong City. This dominant performance underscores the strength and depth of pohang’s soccer program.
Simultaneously, in the general division, Pohang City’s team secured a decisive 4-0 win against Yeongcheon City at the Gimcheon Sineum Neighborhood Park Stadium. This victory propels both teams into the semifinals, further solidifying Pohang’s strong presence in the tournament.
Community Support Fuels Athletes
The athletes from Pohang are not only skilled but also benefit from strong community support. During the soccer matches, approximately 50 employees from the Sangdae-dong Sports Association, Pohang City Construction and Transportation Headquarters, and Sangdae-dong Administrative Welfare Center were present, cheering enthusiastically. Additionally, about 10 members of the Pungmul Band added to the vibrant atmosphere, providing rhythmic encouragement and boosting the morale of the players.

The Road Ahead: Competition Details
The Gyeongbuk Provincial Sports Festival, a significant regional event, will continue until may 12th. This year’s festival features approximately 12,000 athletes representing 22 cities and counties across the province. They will compete fiercely in a total of 30 events, comprising 28 official sports and 2 demonstration events. The competition serves as a platform to showcase athletic talent and foster regional pride.
