STEM Graduates: Driving Italy‘s Economic Growth and Closing the Gender Gap

Analysis reveals the critically important impact of STEM education on individual earnings and national GDP, while initiatives strive for gender equality in these crucial fields.

The Economic Powerhouse: STEM’s Impact on italy’s GDP

Graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are not just securing high-paying jobs; they are significantly contributing to Italy’s economic prosperity. Recent research indicates that the STEM sector, alongside construction, has been a primary driver of GDP growth in Italy over the past five years, contributing an average of 0.36 percentage points annually. This highlights the critical role of STEM education in fostering national competitiveness and innovation.

Financial Rewards and Career Opportunities for STEM Graduates

A collaborative study by Telling Illing, Amazon, and Geneción Code underscores the tangible benefits of pursuing STEM education. The research, unveiled at Didacta Italia in Florence, reveals that STEM graduates enjoy a 14% higher net salary compared to their counterparts in non-STEM fields. Furthermore, their employment rate five years post-graduation stands at an extraordinary 91%, exceeding the 87% rate observed among non-STEM graduates. This data reinforces the notion that STEM degrees translate into lucrative career prospects and enhanced financial security.

The net wage of those who carry out professions in the technical-scientific field, is actually 14% higher than that of workers active in other areas.

Addressing the Gender Imbalance in STEM Fields

Despite a commendable 9% increase in STEM graduates between 2015 and 2023, a persistent gender gap remains a concern. In 2023, women constituted only 41% of STEM graduates, compared to 59% of men. This disparity underscores the need for targeted interventions to encourage greater female participation in STEM disciplines. According to a 2024 UNESCO report, closing the gender gap in STEM could boost global GDP by trillions of dollars, highlighting the economic imperative of achieving gender equality in these fields.

Amazon’s Initiatives to Empower Women in STEM

Recognizing the importance of gender diversity in STEM,Amazon has been actively promoting female participation thru its “Amazon Women in Innovation” program. Now in its seventh year, the program has already supported 26 outstanding female students pursuing STEM degrees. This year, seven students from various Italian universities will receive a €6,000 annual grant for three years, coupled with mentorship from Amazon managers. Such initiatives are crucial in providing financial assistance and guidance to aspiring female STEM professionals.
