AFL Heats Up: Giants Edge Raiders in Nail-Biter
The Austrian Football League (AFL) witnessed a Saturday night spectacle as the Graz Giants narrowly defeated the Swarco Raiders Tirol with a score of 28-27. This victory propels the Giants into a three-way tie at the top of the standings with the Vienna Vikings adn Danube Dragons, setting the stage for an intense season.The Vikings secured thier own win in a defensive struggle against the Danube Dragons, winning 13-7 in the Friday night Vienna Derby.
The weekend’s action concludes with a Sunday afternoon clash between the Salzburg Ducks and the Prague Black Panthers. The ducks,still seeking their first win,hope to capitalize on their recent improved form against the defending champion Black Panthers,who have experienced a somewhat shaky start to the season. The game will be held at the American Football Center Salzburg.
Game Recap: Raiders vs. Giants – A Rollercoaster of Momentum
In front of a vibrant crowd of over 800 spectators at the American Football Center Innsbruck, the Graz Giants drew first blood. Quarterback Mateo Renteria connected with Jakob Begander for a touchdown, followed by a successful PAT from Leo Lipták, giving the Giants an early 7-0 lead.
The second quarter saw the Raiders respond with vigor. Cody Coleman ignited the home crowd with an impressive 41-yard punt return, setting the stage for Ra’von Bonner to punch in a 15-yard touchdown. Lorenz Kriwak’s extra point leveled the score.
Though,the Giants quickly retaliated. Julian Kapellari’s kickoff return placed them deep in Raiders territory, and Renteria found Josef Rock with a long pass.Fritz Bleckmann then powered his way into the endzone, with Lipták adding the extra point to restore the Giants’ lead at 14-7.
The raiders, undeterred, marched down the field with a balanced attack, culminating in Fabian Rolfes’ touchdown run. Trinkl’s successful PAT tied the game once more. Before halftime, Bonner broke free for a powerful 21-yard touchdown run, giving the Raiders their first lead at 21-14 after Trinkl’s successful extra point.
After a scoreless third quarter, the final quarter exploded with action. The Giants capitalized on excellent field position,with Bleckmann driving close to the end zone. Renteria then scored, followed by Lipták’s PAT, tying the game at 21-21.
The Raiders responded swiftly, with Quarterback Stefan Maacher leading his team downfield and stefan Schneider scoring from the 1-yard line, putting the Raiders ahead 27-21. However, a blocked extra point would prove costly. With just 35 seconds remaining,Jakob Schneeberger’s nine-yard touchdown run brought the Giants level. Lipták then sealed the victory with the crucial extra point, securing a 28-27 win for the Giants and propelling them to the top of the league standings.

Despite the narrow defeat,Swarco Raiders Tirol head Coach Dominik Bauer remained optimistic:
I am incredibly proud of the team.This defeat is very bitter, but I think we have proven that we took a step forward. We eliminate mistakes every week, even if it was too much today. But the season is still long!
