A City Transformed by Light: The Lantern Parade

Seoul is set to be bathed in the warm glow of countless lanterns as the annual Lotus Lantern Festival unfolds in anticipation of Buddha’s Birthday on May 5th. This vibrant cultural event, a highlight of the Buddhist calendar, promises a spectacular display of artistry and devotion.

Organized by the Annual Preservation committee, comprised of prominent Buddhist orders such as the Jogye Order, the festival’s centerpiece is a grand lantern parade. Starting at 7 PM from Heunginjimun Gate (Dongdaemun), the procession will wind it’s way towards Jogyesa Temple, a major Buddhist temple in the heart of Seoul. An estimated 50,000 participants, including monks, members of Buddhist organizations, and devout followers, are expected to carry elaborate lanterns adorned with Buddhist symbols, transforming the city streets into a river of light.

The Lotus Lantern Festival is more than just a visual spectacle; it’s a profound expression of faith and a celebration of Buddhist culture that resonates deeply within the community.

Beyond the Parade: Music, Dance, and Cultural Immersion

The festivities extend beyond the lantern parade, offering a diverse range of cultural experiences. Following the parade, a special stage in front of Bosingak will host a performance by Kim Tae-yeon, a rising star in the trot music scene.Attendees can also participate in Daedong Hanmadang, a communal celebration featuring customary Korean dances like Ganggangsullae and the scattering of flower petals.

On April 27th, the Postal Portal Road in front of Jogyesa Temple will transform into a traditional culture yard, providing visitors with opportunities to immerse themselves in Buddhist culture through various interactive exhibits and activities. Later that evening, at 7 PM, the crossroads in front of Jogyesa Temple will come alive with an EDM (Electronic Dance Music) performance by DJ Julian, blending traditional celebrations with contemporary entertainment.

Navigating the Celebrations: Traffic Adjustments and Public Transportation

Attendees should be aware of traffic adjustments implemented to accommodate the festival. Roads between Dongdaemun and Jonggak Intersection will be progressively closed starting at 4 PM on April 26th, remaining closed untill the lantern parade concludes. On April 27th, traffic will be restricted between Anguk Intersection and Jonggak Intersection. City buses operating in the area will be rerouted, and bus stops in Jongno will be temporarily closed. Visitors are encouraged to utilize public transportation to minimize disruptions.

These traffic adjustments are necessary to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the large-scale event. Similar measures are often implemented during major festivals and public gatherings in Seoul, reflecting the city’s commitment to managing large crowds and minimizing inconvenience to residents and visitors alike. For example, during the Seoul International Fireworks Festival, notable road closures and public transportation adjustments are put in place to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of spectators.
