These students are actively contributing to their communities, offering support in diverse settings such as community centers, sports clubs, and refugee shelters. Their commitment highlights a powerful trend of youth engagement in social causes.

Werk van Waarde: ilaisha’s Story
This installment of “Werk van waarde” (Work of value) features Ilaisha, a student of applied psychology, who volunteers as a “buddy” to a man living with Alzheimer’s disease. Her experience offers a glimpse into the profound impact of intergenerational connections and the power of simple acts of kindness.

Breaking Down Barriers: Building a Connection
Ilaisha, 25, initially faced a cautious reception from her buddy. I didn’t feel like it at all,
she recalls of his initial reluctance to engage in activities. However, with patience and understanding,Ilaisha gradually broke down these barriers.
Together with his wife, ilaisha introduced simple activities like playing board games. Over time, a transformation occurred. What started as hesitant participation evolved into genuine enjoyment, laughter, and playful banter. After five months,Ilaisha observed a significant change: It’s really nice to see how he blossoms occasionally.
His initial reserve gave way to visible happiness and anticipation of her visits.
Ilaisha’s Role: More Then Just a Visit
Ilaisha’s role extends beyond mere companionship. She provides crucial social interaction for someone at risk of isolation due to Alzheimer’s. As she explains,Many people with Alzheimer’s withdraw and get isolated from society. That is why his wife gave him up for the ” MaatjePraject ” of the Senior & Student Foundation.
This “Buddy Project,” facilitated by the Senior & Student Foundation, connects students with seniors, fostering meaningful relationships and combating social isolation.
The Broader Impact of Student Volunteering
Ilaisha’s story exemplifies the positive impact of student volunteering. By dedicating their time and energy, students not only enrich the lives of others but also gain valuable experience and develop essential skills.Volunteering fosters empathy, promotes civic engagement, and strengthens communities.
Organizations like the Senior & Student foundation play a vital role in connecting students with opportunities to make a difference. By supporting these initiatives, we can empower young people to become active and engaged citizens, creating a more compassionate and inclusive society.

Youth Engagement: Volunteering as a Cornerstone
A significant portion of young adults are actively contributing to their communities through volunteer work. Recent data indicates a considerable involvement of individuals aged 15 to 25 in various volunteer activities. This trend highlights a growing sense of social responsibility and a desire to make a tangible difference among the younger generation.
Volunteer efforts span a wide array of sectors, from sports and educational associations to cultural institutions and social welfare organizations. This diverse engagement underscores the multifaceted interests and passions driving young volunteers.
Motivations Behind the Dedication
What exactly motivates young people to dedicate their time and energy to volunteer work? For many, it’s a combination of altruism, personal growth, and career aspirations. The “work of Value” series explores these motivations, shedding light on the experiences and lessons gained through volunteering.
A Personal Outlook: Making a Difference, One Interaction at a Time
Consider the experience of one volunteer, who shared their story of working with an individual in need of social connection. This anecdote illustrates the profound impact that even small acts of kindness can have on both the volunteer and the recipient.
I give him a feeling of social contact again, so that he gets the idea that he is still part of society. In the beginning he was usually aloof, but now a smile appears on his face when I enter. With me too, incidentally. I kind of grew on him.
This volunteer’s dedication stems from a desire to become a psychologist, highlighting how volunteering can provide practical experience and insight into different target groups. This hands-on learning is invaluable for those pursuing careers in helping professions.
The Broader Impact: Strengthening Communities
The surge in youth volunteering has far-reaching implications for communities worldwide. By contributing their time and skills, young people are helping to address critical social issues, support vulnerable populations, and build stronger, more resilient communities. This collective effort is essential for creating a more equitable and enduring future.

Finding Purpose Beyond the Classroom: A New Perspective on Alzheimer’s Care
in an era increasingly focused on technological advancement, a heartwarming narrative emerges, highlighting the profound impact of human connection, particularly in the realm of Alzheimer’s care. Ilaisha, an Applied Psychology student, has embarked on a journey that transcends academic learning, offering invaluable companionship to elderly individuals battling Alzheimer’s disease. Her experiences shed light on the transformative power of intergenerational relationships and the potential for enriching the lives of both caregivers and those in their care.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association,in 2024,an estimated 6.9 million Americans aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s. This number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million by 2050, underscoring the urgent need for innovative approaches to care and support.
Stepping Outside the Comfort Zone: Embracing the Unfamiliar
Driven by a desire for personal growth and a yearning to challenge herself, ilaisha sought an experience far removed from her familiar surroundings. “I wanted to do something that challenges me, something outside of my comfort zone,” she explains. “the elderly were totally outside my bubble, but I learn everything from them. Their stories, life experience, way of thinking… I don’t rule out that I want to do something with this target group later.” This willingness to embrace the unfamiliar has opened doors to profound learning and personal fulfillment.
From Personal Experience to Empathetic Action: Becoming the Support She Once Needed
Ilaisha’s motivation stems from a deeply personal place. Having lacked a strong support system during her own childhood, she is steadfast to be that source of support for someone else. “My motivation also comes from my childhood. I didn’t really have someone who supported me, while I actually needed it. Now I want to be that person for someone else. I know how much difference small things can make.” This empathetic approach underscores the importance of understanding individual needs and providing tailored care.
‘as a child I didn’t really have someone who supported me, I now want to be the one for someone else’
Bridging Theory and Practice: Applying Psychological Principles in Real-World Scenarios
Ilaisha’s academic background in Applied Psychology provides a solid foundation for her work. She seamlessly integrates theoretical knowledge with practical submission, enhancing the quality of care she provides.”During my Applied Psychology study I mainly learn theory, but here I can put that knowledge into practice immediately. For example, at school I learn about memory: what is lost at Alzheimer’s, what still works? Things like music, smell or touch can sometimes evoke memories of decades ago. That is why I often opt for sensory stimulation or music therapy in my contact with my buddy – and that works!” this hands-on experience not only reinforces her learning but also allows her to witness the tangible benefits of her interventions.
Moments of Connection: Unlocking Memories through Sensory Stimulation
One particularly poignant experience highlights the power of sensory stimulation in unlocking dormant memories. Ilaisha recounts a moment when a simple tune triggered a vivid recollection in her buddy. “There was once that he heard a sound – a simple tune that sounded somewhere in the background. For me it was something small, something I hardly noticed. But he immediately squeezed his ears. He looked up, his eyes got big, and he said, ‘Hey … I recognize that! That tune is from the past …'”
This experience underscores the potential of music therapy and other sensory interventions in improving the quality of life for individuals with Alzheimer’s. Studies have shown that music can evoke emotions and memories, reduce anxiety, and promote social interaction.
“Sometimes you see something being triggered in him, then he talks in full and looks clear out of his eyes”
The impact was profound. “I literally saw it happen: something in his brain was triggered, and he lived fully. He smiled, looked clearly from his eyes, and started talking spontaneously about the past.He might forget what happened yesterday, but a simple sound can suddenly touch something that is still alive deep inside, with someone who has just lost so much.” This powerful moment serves as a reminder of the enduring human spirit and the importance of preserving dignity and connection in the face of cognitive decline.
The Importance of Being Heard: Fostering a Sense of Value and Dignity
Ilaisha’s experiences have instilled in her a deep appreciation for the importance of empathy and active listening. “The contact with the elderly also brings me a lot. You can have really deep conversations with them. Super learning. It is indeed not always easy and sometimes quite a bit of looking for what is best for this man, people with Alzheimer’s are very dependent. You realize how significant it is indeed that they feel and heard. But frequently enough there are also very special moments. Then he tells something about the past or we have an in -depth conversation. Then I know: this contact matters.” By creating a safe and supportive environment, she empowers individuals with Alzheimer’s to share their stories and feel valued.
