Turin Day Centre for Homeless Faces Closure amidst Rising Poverty

A Sanctuary Closing its Doors: The End of Opportunance

after more than two decades of service, the Opportunance day center in the San salvario district of Torino, a vital refuge for the city’s homeless population, is slated to close at the end of this month. The center, known for providing a safe haven and essential support, has witnessed an alarming surge in demand, highlighting the escalating crisis of poverty in the region.

Overwhelmed by Growing Needs

The closure isn’t due to a lack of people needing help; quite the opposite. In 2024 alone, the center recorded over 27,000 visits, a staggering increase of 6,000 compared to the previous year. This surge underscores the growing number of individuals struggling with homelessness and poverty in Turin. The center routinely serves between 150 and 200 people daily, offering a space for respite, conversation, and crucial connections to social and medical services.Importantly, access is granted without requiring reservations or identification.

“We have reached the maximum of our possibilities. The space is too small for all these new needs and the group of volunteers has made its cycle therefore reluctantly the project for now ends here.”

Carlo Saccani, President of Opportunance

The existing facilities and volunteer base are simply unable to cope with the ever-increasing demand. This situation mirrors a broader trend across Italy, where social services are struggling to keep pace with rising poverty rates. According to recent ISTAT (Italian National Institute of Statistics) data, the number of people living in absolute poverty in Italy has increased significantly in recent years, placing immense strain on organizations like Opportunance.

A “Miracle” Lost: The Impact on Individuals

For many, the Opportunance center represents more than just a place to rest; it’s a lifeline. Jennifer, a regular visitor, describes the center as a “miracle” that is now fading away. She emphasizes the importance of having a supportive habitat where individuals can find companionship and assistance, rather than being left to navigate the streets alone.

This place was a miracle for me,a miracle that is now turning off – here you have a shoulder,a support,a chat, you don’t have to be all day in the middle of the road.

A Call for Continued Civic engagement

Opportunance has operated largely through the dedication of a core group of volunteers and limited public funding. While acknowledging the importance of institutional support, the organization emphasizes its commitment to civic duty and addressing the needs of marginalized populations. Thier approach prioritizes recognizing the inherent dignity of each individual they serve.

“Our approach was not to want to replace the institutions, but our viewpoint was that of a civil commitment, a civic duty to take care of a range of population that needs because it is marginalized.”

carlo Saccani, President of Opportunance

As the center prepares to close, organizers are hosting a farewell gathering, hoping to inspire others to continue their work. The hope is that another organization or group will step forward to fill the void left by Opportunance, ensuring that this vital service continues to be available to those in need. The closure serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by vulnerable populations and the critical role that community-based organizations play in providing essential support.
