Driven by firsthand experience of healthcare personnel shortages and the resulting adverse events, two doctors from the Humanitas Research Hospital of Rozzano, Marco Scardino (primary of anesthesia) and Francesco Tasso (anesthesiologist), partnered with management expert Roberto Schibuola to launch Bispi
in 2023.This startup has developed the Bepi Dispenser, an automated drug dispensing system designed to streamline medication delivery directly at the patient’s bedside.
Bepi Dispenser: How It Works
The Bepi Dispenser, resembling a bedside locker, utilizes patented technology to ensure safe and timely medication administration. Its user-kind design features a single button that activates a sound signal at pre-set times. Patients can then use a designated bracelet to access their medication. Once the medication packaging is placed back into the dispenser, the system automatically notifies healthcare staff via software, confirming medication adherence. According to Tasso,the dispenser is suitable for approximately 70% of autonomous hospital patients and can be easily configured by importing prescriptions from electronic medical records or inputting them via a dedicated tablet. The device can hold up to sixty pills, accommodating most patients’ hospitalization needs, with the versatility to make adjustments as required.

medication, particularly for post-operative pain management. Scardino explains that traditionally, patients requiring additional pain relief must contact a nurse, who then consults with a doctor for a prescription, leading to delays. With Bepi, as needed
pills are pre-loaded into the dispenser, allowing patients to access them directly when needed.This not only reduces the workload for healthcare staff but also minimizes patient waiting times, leading to faster recovery and improved patient satisfaction.

By optimizing medication delivery and reducing delays, the system can contribute to economic savings for healthcare facilities. Considering that the average cost of a hospital day is around seven hundred euros, even small reductions in hospitalization time can result in significant cost savings. Currently in the pre-industrialization phase, Bepi Dispenser is set to launch its first prototypes in the summer. The startup has already secured letters of commitment from seven healthcare facilities in northern Italy and is pursuing financial autonomy through an equity crowdfunding campaign on the mamacrowd portal by mid-2026. While the initial focus is on supplying Italian hospitals,Bispi aims to expand internationally,with interest already expressed from the United States.
