President Joko Widodo, facing persistent accusations regarding the authenticity of his academic credentials, is exploring legal avenues to combat what his team describes as slander and the spread of misinformation.
Mounting pressure and a Shift in Strategy
After maintaining a largely passive stance, President Jokowi is now actively considering legal recourse against individuals and groups perpetuating claims of a false degree. This decision follows a meeting held at his private residence in Solo, where he consulted with his legal team to discuss strategies for addressing the ongoing controversy.
Legal Team Prepares for Action
Yakup Hasibuan, a member of Jokowi’s legal representation, stated that the team is preparing legal steps to address accusations concerning the President’s diploma from Gadjah Mada University (UGM). According to Hasibuan, the shift in approach is motivated by concerns that certain parties are operating outside the bounds of the law, engaging in what they believe to be slanderous activities. The legal team aims to prevent further dissemination of false news
and protect the President’s reputation.
now indeed we are fighting legal steps becuase we see more here there are elements or there are parties who have started to undergo paths outside of the law and that is very very nature that there is already a false news, its nature is more towards slander and this we want to avoid.

Past Legal Victories and Continued Scrutiny
Despite previous legal victories in cases challenging the validity of his diploma, the issue continues to resurface. Hasibuan highlighted that Jokowi has already won two lawsuits in the Central Jakarta District Court and one in the State administrative Court (PTUN) related to this matter. The persistence of these claims, despite legal validation and university confirmation, has prompted bewilderment among the President’s supporters and legal team.
UGM’s stance: Diploma Authenticity Confirmed
Gadjah Mada University has consistently affirmed the authenticity of President Jokowi’s diploma. The university has publicly refuted claims made by a former lecturer questioning the validity of Jokowi’s academic credentials.Dean of the faculty of Forestry UGM, Sigit Sunarta, emphasized that the diploma and thesis are genuine, supported by records of his enrollment, coursework, thesis work, and the recollections of his classmates.
Keep in mind the diploma and thesis from Joko widodo is authentic. he had studied here, his classmate he knew him well, he was active in the Student Activities (Silvagama), he was recorded to take many courses, working on his thesis, so that his diploma was issued by UGM.

The Broader context of Misinformation
This situation underscores the growing challenge of combating misinformation and disinformation in the digital age. According to a recent study by the pew Research Center, approximately 64% of adults believe that fabricated news stories cause a great deal of confusion about current events. The spread of false information can have meaningful consequences, impacting public trust, political discourse, and even national security. The legal action being considered by President Jokowi reflects a growing trend among public figures to actively defend themselves against online attacks and false narratives.
