Sectarian Aberrations in Healthcare: A Growing Concern

The Rising tide of Sectarian Influence in Health and Wellness
The Interministerial Mission of Vigilance and the Fight Against Sectarian Aberrations (MIVILUDES) has issued a stark warning: the health sector is increasingly vulnerable to sectarian deviations. This includes the concerning presence of unconventional care practices, even within established healthcare facilities.
Alarming Increase in Reported Cases
Recent data underscores the urgency of the situation. In 2024, MIVILUDES processed 4,571 reports, marking a notable surge of 13.7% compared to 2021 and a staggering 111% increase since 2015. A comprehensive analysis of reports from 2022 to 2024 reveals that health and well-being related concerns constitute the largest category (37%), surpassing even cults and spiritualities (35%). This trend, highlighted in MIVILUDES’ latest activity report, reinforces their previous assessment from 2022,which already identified health as an area of “major concern.”
Unconventional Care Practices: A Closer Look
While cancer patients remain particularly susceptible to sectarian health drifts, MIVILUDES is now focusing on the proliferation of unconventional care practices (UCPs) within healthcare settings. These practices, frequently enough marketed as “soft,” “complementary,” or “alternative,” lack scientific validation in the vast majority of cases. The organization has received numerous reports detailing the normalization of these practices within health establishments, frequently without adequate warnings or medical oversight.

the claim of certain pseudotherapists to substitute the PSNCs for conventional medicine, wholly excluding the use of it.MIVILUDES Report, 2024
Legal Repercussions and Reported Offenses
the consequences of these sectarian drifts are far-reaching. In 2024, MIVILUDES forwarded 45 cases to prosecution, a significant increase from 2021.These cases often involve unqualified individuals providing “advice” or “pseudo-treatments” without proper medical credentials. Other offenses include the illegal practice of pharmacy, dietetics, and the fraudulent use of medical titles.
Examples of Sectarian Practices and their dangers
The report details alarming examples of these practices.”Pseudotherapists” often promote restrictive diets, encourage the use of unproven remedies like lithotherapy (stone-based treatments), or employ dubious diagnostic tools, such as a “Russian” magnetic resonance device that contradicts established cancer diagnoses.individuals with disabilities are also vulnerable, as illustrated by the case of a young woman with psychiatric disorders who discontinued her prescribed medication in favor of essential oils, adhering to the principles of “quantum aromatherapy.”
Today, it is common to find sessions of reiki, magnetism or even ‘Tibetan bowl’ in public health establishments.

The Need for Vigilance and Regulation
The rise of sectarian aberrations in healthcare demands increased vigilance and stricter regulation. It is indeed crucial to ensure that patients receive evidence-based medical care and are protected from potentially harmful or misleading practices. Further inquiry and public awareness campaigns are essential to combat this growing threat to public health.
