This isn’t the first time concerns about industrial pollution have surfaced in the Decazeville area.A study conducted in Viviez in October 2008 by the Regional InVS antenna (Interregional Epidemiology Unit) in collaboration with the Regional Health Agency in the Midi-Pyrénées Region (formerly DDASS de l’Aveyron) aimed to assess the health impact of pollutants like lead, cadmium, and arsenic, which have accumulated in the soil after 150 years of industrial activity.

The 2011 findings revealed that among adults in Viviez who had not been professionally exposed to these pollutants, 22% exhibited cadmiuria levels exceeding 1 μg/g of creatinine, indicating excessive impregnation and a potential risk of renal involvement. Furthermore, 19 renal attacks were detected in Viviez, compared to none in the nearby, unexposed commune of Montbazens. The study suggested that consumption of local produce (fruits, vegetables, eggs, poultry, rabbits) and exposure to dust from polluted soils could be contributing factors.
