While Drake himself didn’t navigate this specific passage,his expedition through the Magellan Strait demonstrated the existence of open waters south of South America,paving the way for future voyages around the world. However, it’s worth noting that Spanish navigators refer to this waterway as mar de Hoces, named after Francisco de Hoces, who is believed to have discovered these waters in 1525 while sailing through the Magellan Strait.
The first documented triumphant navigation of the Drake Strait occurred in 1616, led by Willem Schouten of the Dutch East India Company, who sailed around Cape Horn.

Experiencing the Drake Passage: A First-Hand Account
In December 2019, a team of six explorers achieved a historic feat by rowing across the Drake Passage, enduring a grueling 13-day battle against the elements. Colin O’Brady, a member of the crew, recounted the ordeal:
