by Archynetys News Desk

At the Trofeo Princesa Sofia in Palma, despite the strong wind and the shortened programme, there are very positive signs for Italy, with several crews in the top ten. Elena Berta and Giulio Calabrò are third in the 470 mixed, Lorenzo Pezzilli and Tobia Torroni remain among the best in the 49er, while Riccardo Pianosi leads the men’s Formula Kite. Marta Maggetti also did well, third in the women’s iQ FOiL, and the young Medea Falcioni, ninth: a competitive Italian team and protagonist in several classes.

At the Princesa Sofia Trophy in Palma, the third day of testing took place today for the ten Olympic classes competing. Making a brief recap, the qualifying phase ended yesterday, while today a new phase of the event opened with the start of the finals. The weather conditions, however, were characterized by strong winds, which prevented the program from fully taking place in many classes: in fact, the Nacra 17 and the men’s iQ FOiL did not take to the water.

470 MIXED

Yesterday five races were held, while today the program continued with three further regattas, entering the heart of the competition. In first position the Spaniards Jordi Xammar / Nora Brugman, in second the French Matisse Pacaud / Lucie Degenes, in third the Italians Elena Berta / Giulio Calabrò. A ranking that well reflects the values seen in the water since the first days: Xammar and Brugman recover from fourth position, confirming a notable continuity of performance and the ability to best interpret different conditions, a quality that today projects them into the lead.

Behind them, Pacaud and Degenes drop to second position after being in the lead yesterday, but continue to demonstrate great solidity with a series always in top positions, without empty passes, a fundamental element in such a competitive fleet. In third position are Berta and Calabrò with 3, 22, 10 today.

On equal points with Berta-Calabrò is the other Italian crew formed by Giacomo Ferrari and Alessandra Dubbini, who obtained these partials: 4, 4 RDG, (DNC).

The value of the CF (position score) should be underlined: for Berta-Calabrò it is equal to 2, while for Ferrari-Dubbini it is 7. This score represents the ranking position at the end of the qualifications and is transferred to the Gold phase as an initial basis for the finals.

Further back in the fleet, Livia Ciampinelli and Nicola Brunotti are twenty-seventh in Silver, while Lisa Vucetti and Vittorio Bonifacio occupy thirty-fifth position. Emma Maltese and Marcello Miliardi finished in thirty-ninth position.

The (good) news for us is the return to the uptown districts of Chiara Benini Floriani, who has risen to 15th place thanks to a good start in Gold (10), with 31 points: only 5 points separate her from the top-ten and therefore from the Medal finals.

49er

In the men’s 49er, after seven races in total, with only one race held today due to strong winds, the face of the general classification changes again. The Americans Nevin Snow and Ian MacDiarmid now take the lead, followed by the Uruguayans Hernán Umpierre and Fernando Diz, while the Australians Harry Price and Max Paul, protagonists in the previous days but less incisive today, slip into third position.

As for the Italians, Lorenzo Pezzilli and Tobia Torroni lose some positions but still remain in the top ten, dropping to ninth place with an eleventh in today’s test. A limited decline for the young Italians, who continue to demonstrate solidity and remain fully in the running for a top placing. Zeno Valerio Marchesini and Leonardo Chistè are instead fourteenth, penalized by a twenty-first place on the day, a result that puts them back slightly while keeping them in an area of the ranking that is still interesting.

Further back the other Italian crews: Jan Pernarcic and Bruno Festo occupy the fiftieth position, Alessio and Walter Bonizzoni are sixty-ninth, Alessandro Mare and Matteo Maione ninety-third, while Niccolò Giomarelli and Antonio Di Leo currently close in ninety-ninth position.

49er FX

The 49er FX class took to the water first today and completed two races, thus reaching a total of races held which allows the ranking to emerge more clearly.

Compared to yesterday, the Spaniards Paula Barcelò and Maria Cantero take the lead, thanks to a solid day that puts them at the top of the overall. Behind them come the Germans Maru Scheel and Freya Feilcke, while the Swedes Vilma Bobeck and Ebba Berntsson confirm themselves in third position, already protagonists in the first days and only at the beginning of their new four-year period together, but already very competitive at the highest levels.

As for the Italians, Sofia Giunchiglia and Giulia Schio lose a few positions and drop to twenty-first place, with today’s partials of 8 and 13. Not an easy day, but which still keeps them close to the top 20 in a particularly competitive fleet.

Jana Germani also slips slightly, continuing this transition phase by racing with the Dutch bowman Anne De Kort and with the NED 848 boat: the Italian, in “Dutch” guise (pass the term), is now seventeenth, with an STP of 10-11 on the day. Even in this case, there is still ample margin to move up in a ranking that remains very open.

Behind him, the Singaporean Maximilian Maeder confirms himself, always extremely regular and ready to take advantage of any misstep by the leader, while the Brazilian Bruno Lobo remains in third position, also stable in the top positions.

Formula Kite femminile

In the women’s Formula Kite the day was shorter than expected, with only two races held, but enough to confirm and partially reshuffle the balance of the general classification. The Dutch/French Jessie Kampman remains in command, continuing to surprise with her continuity and solidity, maintaining her lead even after today’s regattas. Behind her, Lauriane Nolot, the reference athlete of the class and one of the most awaited protagonists, climbs decisively, recovering positions and returning to the very top of the rankings. Chinese Chenxue Liu confirms herself in third position, always regular and well present in the leading group.

As for the Italians, Tiana Laporte now occupies sixteenth position, while Giorgia Speciale is twenty-first.

iQ FOiL femminile

Three races were held in the women’s iQ FOiL fleet, bringing the total to seven regattas overall and partially redesigning the general classification.

The Polish Anastasia Valkevich takes the lead, followed by the Israeli Tamar Steinberg, while in third position is Marta Maggetti, protagonist of a very solid day closed with partials 4, 1 and 2. The performance of the very young Medea Falcioni is also excellent, remaining in the upper areas of the ranking with a ninth place overall, the result of partials 5, 6 and 11, confirming herself to be competitive even in comparison with more experienced athletes.

The other Italians are further behind: Linda Oprandi is nineteenth, Sofia Renna occupies thirty-third position, while Carola Colasanto is fifty-second.
