Dramatic Recovery of Two More bodies from Assam Coal Mine, Tragic Death Toll Reaches Six
GUWAHATI, 19 Feb:
Emergency divers have recovered the decomposed bodies of two more miners from a flooded coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, marking 44 days since the nine workers went missing.
Search and Rescue Efforts Yield Fruits
This recovery brings the total number of found victims to six out of the nine trapped in the Umrangshu mine.
Ongoing dewatering operations for over a month finally paid off when divers discovered and retrieved the two bodies.
Family Support and Compensation
While the identities of the recovered miners have yet to be confirmed, the families have received ex-gratia payments. The government has awarded 10 lakh rupees each to the families of the four miners whose bodies were found earlier, and 6 lakh rupees per family for those remaining inside.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously promised 10 lakh rupees per family of all trapped individuals, further emphasizing the state’s commitment to supporting the affected families.
Continued Efforts and Expert Inquiry
The dewatering process, as per the Chief Minister’s projection, could take anywhere from 25 to 60 days to complete, pending a “logical conclusion.”
The Assam government has initiated a judicial inquiry into the incident, appointing retired high court judge Anima Hazarika to head the investigation.
Questions Raised about Mine Ownership and Neglect
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier stated that the mine was declared abandoned 12 years ago, asserting its affiliation with the Assam Mineral Development Corporation terminating three years back. The tragic event has once more raised questions about the proper supervision and safety measures in mining operations.
Community Response and Focus on Safety Reforms
This incident underscores the critical need for stringent safety protocols and regulations in the mining sector. As rescue efforts continue, the community demands transparency and accountability from the government and mining corporations to prevent future tragedies.
The families of the miners, while devastated by this loss, have shown remarkable resilience and continue to support one another through this extraordinary hardship.
In the wake of such a brutal disaster, the spotlight must now shift towards stricter safety measures, comprehensive inspections, and fair compensation for the miners and their families.
