Jakarta – In a significant move to enhance national cybersecurity, retired Lieutenant General Nugroho Sulistyo Budi has been appointed as the Head of the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN). Budi outlined his new responsibilities and the expectations placed upon him during a press conference at the State Palace.

Roles and Responsibilities

Budi stated that one of his main tasks is to protect personal and confidential data. This directive underscores the critical importance of data security in today’s digital age.

Alongside this, Budi is also responsible for implementing Presidential Instruction Number 4 of 2025, which pertains to the National Integrated Socio-Economic Data (DTSEN). This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of socio-economic data management across the nation.

President Prabowo Subianto, in conjunction with other appointments, formally inducted Budi as the BSSN head at the State Palace. The appointment is detailed in Presidential Decree Number 29 P of 2025.

Budi’s induction comes after a brief period of holding an interim role. General Agus Subiyanto, the Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), initially promoted Budi to this position in December 2024. However, due to Budi’s impending retirement, Subiyanto withdrew his name. Hinsa Siburian temporarily fulfilled the role until Budi’s inauguration.

Budi also served as an expert staff member to the Minister of Defense for politics. This diverse background underscores his suitability for overseeing the BSSN and tackling the multifaceted challenges of digital security.

The Importance of Data Protection in Indonesia

The mandate given to Budi emphasizes the overarching goal of ensuring data confidentiality, integrity, and availability. These principles are crucial for leveraging data to drive national development and socioeconomic progress effectively.

By prioritizing these aspects, Budi can facilitate the safe usage of digital data for various government initiatives. This includes policies aimed at improving child protection, which aligns with the broader mission of data harmonization.
