Karol Nawrocki has been the president of Poland for several months. Previously, he graduated from history studies at the University of Gdańsk, with which other famous Polish politicians were associated, including: presidents Aleksander Kwaśniewski and Lech Kaczyński. It was there that Prime Minister Donald Tusk also studied history. That’s why I asked Nawrocki’s lecturers and fellow students what kind of student he was. Here’s what I heard.

Even though 13 years have passed since Nawrocki defended his doctorate (title of the thesis: “Social resistance to the communist authorities in the Elbląg Voivodeship”), lecturers still remember him well.
— He was my student, he sat in the back bench and participated passionately in the discussion. Well prepared. I remember how he accused me of giving them some leftist propaganda to read. I appreciated his commitment, he got an A in my class – one of the lecturers who taught classes with Nawrocki tells Onet.

As he adds, he later came across Nawrocki at one of the scientific conferences. The current president was one of the first to deal with the issue of organized crime in the Polish People’s Republic. — He talked interestingly about gangsters and smugglers. It turned out that he encountered some of them as a student, working as a gatekeeper in one of Tricity’s establishments, which is why the report was so colorful – adds the UG lecturer.

Other academics also speak in a similar tone. — After his doctorate, he was not active scientifically, which is understandable due to his administrative duties. Managing the Museum of the Second World War, and later the Institute of National Remembrance, is completely different from research work – says one of the UG professors. — I am afraid that being guided by his private views and beliefs has dominated and will continue to dominate his actions, regardless of the functions he holds, adds the historian.

What kind of student was President Nawrocki? “He had trouble formulating his thoughts”
A slightly different image of Nawrocki appears in the eyes of students. — He was a very average student. During the defense, he was very stressed and had a hard time formulating his thoughts, I hear from one of his fellow students.
— During his studies, he seemed confident, although this was not always reflected in his exams, my interlocutor continues.
As he adds, when it comes to political activity, Nawrocki has always been very active. He participated in the June anniversaries of the overthrow of Jan Olszewski’s government, picketing in front of Lech Wałęsa’s house.
