Casey Means approached her Senate confirmation hearing to be US Surgeon General last week with a manifesto in mind—one set out in her 2024 book, Good Energy: the Surprising Connection Between Glucose, Metabolism, and Limitless Health. Nominated by US President Trump, supported by Robert F Kennedy Jr, and branded a Make America Healthy Again warrior, Means is a more complex advocate for health than her provenance might suggest. Her motivation comes partly from watching her mother succumb horrifyingly quickly to pancreatic cancer.
