HIV Prevention: France Leads EU with Full Coverage of New Treatment

by Archynetys Health Desk

A major new advance in the HIV prevention arsenal. We know the preventive treatment for HIV, or Prep for “pre-exposure prophylaxis”, in the form of tablets to be taken frequently. It exists in injectable and long-acting form. In September 2023, the European Medicines Agency granted its marketing authorization in September 2023.

This is cabotegravir, marketed under the name Apretude. In May 2024, the High Authority for Health issued a favorable opinion for its reimbursement. It is now done. Since March 2, this treatment has been available in France and 100% refundable by health insurance in application of a decree of February 26.

Clinical trials have notably shown that this new injectable treatment is more effective than the daily oral regimen. The specialized agency of the United Nations, UNAIDS, welcomed this progress in the fight against HIV, estimating that “This treatment could be a game-changer.”
