With the objective of preventing and comprehensively addressing overweight and obesity in the population, the Ministry of Public Health (SSP) of the Government of Sonora has Comprehensive Nutrition Clinics, specialized spaces where free multidisciplinary care is provided to improve lifestyle habits and reduce the risks associated with this condition.
These units offer social work, nursing, medicine, nutrition, psychology and physical activation services, providing personalized support and continuous monitoring to support people in their health care.
The Comprehensive Nutrition Clinics operate in Hermosillo, Ciudad Obregón, Nogales, Caborca and Cananea, and are available to all people interested in receiving professional guidance for weight control and the prevention of associated diseases, regardless of age or eligibility.
Within the framework of World Day against Obesity, the state agency reiterated the importance of strengthening prevention and early care actions, as well as promoting healthy lifestyles among the population to reduce the incidence of this disease.
Obesity can be related to a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating patterns, lack of sleep and high levels of stress; However, it can also be associated with genetic syndromes such as Cohen or Alström syndrome, as well as endocrine disorders such as hypothyroidism or Cushing’s syndrome. In addition, environmental factors, such as easy access to ultra-processed foods and unhealthy environments, influence their development.
To identify overweight or obesity, the Body Mass Index (BMI) is used, which compares weight with height. When the result is greater than 25, it is considered overweight and if it exceeds 30, obesity. The SSP recalled that this condition can be prevented with healthy habits such as a balanced diet, daily physical activity, good rest and periodically going to the Health Center or Comprehensive Nutrition Clinics to receive professional guidance.
