MWC 2026: Mobile Satellite Connectivity & Future Networks

by Archynetys Economy Desk

The operator established cooperation with the Luxembourg company Satellite Connect Europe, a provider of open access to a direct D2D (direct-to-device) satellite connection. The aim is to examine how the satellite could supplement the existing mobile networks in Europe, specifically in Spain and Germany.

It is not about replacing mobile networks, but about expanding them. The collaboration is to focus on analyzing how satellite D2D technologies could be integrated with Telefónica‘s existing 4G and 5G networks.

The ambition is to supplement terrestrial connectivity and increase network resilience, for example in remote areas or in emergency situations – while maintaining a fully operator-managed environment.

Where the infrastructure hits its limits

At the same time, Telefónica emphasizes that it supports the development of satellite services in accordance with European regulatory frameworks and rules for the use of frequency spectrum. In this direction as well, he wants to continue discussions with relevant partners about the future development of D2D satellite connectivity in Europe.

At a press conference in Barcelona, it was said that satellite connections could help solve connectivity needs in places where today’s classic infrastructure is reaching its limits.

“By exploring new technologies for direct satellite connectivity to devices, Telefónica aims to deepen its understanding of how satellite connectivity can complement advanced mobile networks and help address connectivity needs in remote areas across Europe,” said Andrea Folgueiras, one of Telefónica’s global business leaders.

“We are delighted to announce this collaboration with Telefónica. It is another significant step forward in providing direct satellite connectivity to AST SpaceMobile devices to customers across Europe, while demonstrating the growing alignment of leading operators supporting Satellite Connect Europe,” said Satellite Connect Europe CEO Meredith Sharples.

A significant trend

Satellite connectivity is emerging as one of the prominent trends at MWC this year. While a few years ago it was more of an experimental project, today it is being talked about as a real addition to mobile networks.

With its announcement, Telefónica thus fits into the broader picture – finding ways to ensure an accessible connection even where the last “comma” of the signal ends today. And it is the combination of classic mobile networks and satellite connection that may be one of the answers that is heading to the whole of Europe from Barcelona this year.
