UF Rises: Colombia’s Currency Near $40K – Economy Update

The Development Unit (UF) will resume the increases throughout February, after the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January was 0.4% monthly and 2.8% year-on-year.

In this way, given that UF, which on the 9th of this month will reach $39,682.99, will then add a total of $158,73 over a month until marking the $39.841,72.

During January, the indicator moved downward, as inflation in December of last year was negative at -0.2%.

What is UF?

The UF represents the weight readjustability, according to inflation: its adjustments depend directly on the CPI.

In simple words, this means that Its value in pesos is recalculated every month based on the CPI.

Its variation affects most loans, especially those related to the real estate market -leases and mortgages- since they are set in UF; also in health plans, unemployment fund, insurance, education costs, among others.

The INE detailed that, among some of the products that make up the basket, it was noted that last month there was an increase in the prices of common expenses (+4.5%), wines (+7.2%) and drinks (+3.8%).

On the other hand, gasoline and international air transport They showed drops of 3.3% and 17.6%, respectively.

Another highlight of the latest CPI was that the annual figure fell by 3% for the first time since February 2021, marking a milestone in the management of inflation in Chile, where The Central Bank established that the inflation goal was the aforementioned 3%.
