Key Personnel Conclude Recovery Operations on Potomac River
A multi-agency team, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Navy’s Supervisor of Salvage and Diving, has successfully concluded the recovery operations following a tragic midair collision on the evening of January 29. The incident involved an American Airlines-owned American Eagle Flight 5342 airliner and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter.
Details of the Tragic Midair Collision
The American Eagle jet, a Bombardier CRJ700, carried 64 passengers and crew members. At the time of the collision, the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was on a nighttime training mission with three soldiers onboard. The planes collided over the Potomac River, resulting in no survivors.
Recovery of Human Remains and Wreckage
Salvage crews completed the recovery of all 67 bodies from the river on February 4. Following this grim task, their efforts shifted to recovering the remains of the aircraft. As of Tuesday, the team removed the last significant pieces of the airliner. They then turned their attention to the helicopter, with the final large pieces retrieved on Thursday.

The large pieces of both aircraft are now being transported by truck to a secure location.
