SHAFAQNA – Dr. Preeti Subhedar, from Hackensack University Medical Center, reported that white bread, white rice, cakes, and sweetened soft drinks may increase the risk of cancer after the age of 50.
According to her, the aforementioned foods cause a sharp rise in blood sugar levels, and stimulate the production of insulin and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which is involved in regulating cell division, and its chronic high level increases the possibility of uncontrolled growth of cancer cells.
In addition, refined carbohydrates contribute to chronic inflammation and increased free radicals, which damage cells and DNA. After the age of fifty, metabolic and hormonal changes increase the body’s sensitivity to these effects, which makes the role of nutrition in cancer prevention very important.
As an alternative, the doctor recommends following a diet based on whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, healthy fats, and lean protein, because this diet helps maintain stable blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, and provide the body with antioxidants that help protect cells from damage.
At the same time, the doctor stresses that this does not mean completely excluding some foods, but rather reducing their proportion in the daily diet as part of a long-term strategy to reduce the risk of cancer.
