The first half of the match was dictated by “Blaugrana”. However, the guests failed to prove their advantage with goals. Despite dominating possession of the ball, they did not create clear opportunities to defeat the hosts’ goalkeeper. Racing counterattacked dangerously and threatened the Catalans’ defense several times, but they also failed to put the ball into the net.

After the change of sides, Barcelona kicked into high gear. Already in the first minutes, Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford had their chances, but in both situations Jokin Ezkieta, the goalkeeper of the Santander team, showed reflexes. Despite the passage of time, Hansi Flick’s players were still unable to break through the tight defense of the hosts.
The pressure of the “Pride of Catalonia” brought results in the 66th minute. One brilliant pass from Fermin Lopez was enough to tear apart Racing’s defense. Ferran Torres found himself in a one-on-one situation, bypassing the goalkeeper and cold-bloodedly directing the ball into the net. However, shortly after scoring the goal, the Spanish striker left the pitch and was replaced by Robert Lewandowski.
In the 77th minute, the home fans were on their feet when Manex Lozano scored in the Blaugrana net. However, the joy was premature – the substitute “Racinguistas” was offside and the goal was annulled. A few dozen seconds later, the captain of the Polish national team had his chance. Lewandowski found himself in an advantageous situation for a follow-up, but he hit the goalkeeper, who made a great save.
Just a few minutes later, Lozano again headed the ball into the goal guarded by Joan Garcia. However, the ropes judge raised his flag again and signaled an offside position. At the very end, the 18-year-old Racing striker had a chance to equalize, but at the decisive moment the visitors’ goalkeeper emerged victorious from the one-on-one situation.
In the last minute of added time, Lamine Yamal scored the result. The winger headed the ball into an empty net after an assist from Raphinha.
Wojciech Szczęsny watched the entire match from the Barcelona bench.
Interestingly, last year’s finalist, Real Madrid, will not be present in the quarter-finals of the competition. The team led by the new coach, Alvaro Arbeloi, sensationally lost in the 1/8 finals to second-league Albacete 2-3. Let us remind you that it is the “Pride of Catalonia” that is defending the title won last year.
