Pat Perez’s LIV Golf Farewell: New Broadcast Role in Riyadh

by Archynetys Sports Desk

If Pat Perez had his way, he’d still be swinging clubs on professional tours instead of behind the camera. The three-time PGA Tour champion, now 48, has made a smooth transition to becoming an on-course reporter for LIV Golf’s broadcast team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Life After LIV Golf: A New Chapter

Perez’s decision to sign a guaranteed contract with LIV Golf in 2022 seemed promising, but his playing career took an unexpected turn. After the 2023 season, no LIV Golf team retained him, ending his time as a professional golfer.

However, Perez is not retiring from golf entirely. Instead, he secured a role in LIV Golf’s broadcasting lineup for their upcoming events, starting with the Riyadh tournament.

“I’m glad this is an opportunity for me,” Perez stated in an interview. “I’m grateful for this opportunity.”

His Time with LIV Golf: A Present and Future Outlook

Perez spent three seasons as a member of Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces team in LIV Golf. Although he had a two-year contract initially,Johnson’s team extended it for 2024. However, his performance placed him outside LIV’s “lock zone”—the top 24 points earners—ending his chances of retention.

When teams failed to offer him a contract, he turned to broadcasting. “I don’t know who didn’t want me to play. let’s put it this way, I don’t think it was DJ,” he admitted. “I think DJ loved having me on the team. But obviously, they’re trying to go with younger players.”

Personal Struggles: The Human Toll of Career Upheaval

Perez acknowledged the challenges he faced during his final season. “I had the worst 18 months of my life,” he admitted. “I didn’t play very well. And for whatever reason, they didn’t sign me.” These months were marred by his younger brother Mike’s passing in July 2023 and his divorce.

“Yeah, a lot of distractions,” he reflected. “A divorce is never easy. We have two kids, and a full plate of stuff. Trying to get ready to play and compete against some of the top players in the world is a tall order.”

Despite these personal hardships, Perez remained optimistic about his future in golf, expressing a desire to move on to the PGA Tour Champions circuit.

Perez’s Transition to Commentator: A New Role

As an on-course reporter alongside Su-Ann Heng and Dom Boulet, Perez will contribute to LIV Golf’s broadcasts. He will work alongside veteran broadcasters Arlo White, Jerry Foltz, and David Feherty, furthering LIV Golf’s partnership with Fox Sports in the United States.

Perez plans to leverage his extensive golfing experience to add depth to his commentary. “I’ve had great talks with the LIV people and I’m excited about this opportunity,” he expressed. “I think it’s something I can do for a long time.”

The PGA Tour Controversy and Future Prospects

Perez’s departure from LIV Golf echoes the ongoing tensions between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. He was initially part of a lawsuit against the PGA Tour but later withdrew. As a former PGA Tour member, Perez now finds himself in a purgatory-like state, unable to compete in sanctioned PGA Tour events.

Perez sees the PGA Tour-LIV Golf “merger” as a potential pathway for him to return to competitive golf. “A lot of it I guess will have to do with what happens with this so-called merger. If it doesn’t happen, I see no chance (of playing on the Champions Tour),” he stated.

His PGA Tour career earnings exceed $28 million, making him fully exempt on the PGA Tour Champions. However, he needs official permission from the PGA Tour to resume playing.

Looking Ahead: Pat Perez’s Future

Perez’s current role in LIV Golf’s broadcasting team provides a stable platform for his commentary career. He expressed his excitement about this opportunity and his willingness to contribute to the sport’s coverage.

As for his future, Perez remains hopeful but pragmatic about his PGA Tour Champions aspirations. “I’m not looking to come back to the PGA Tour. I don’t have any status any way other than the past champions category. I’ve never been a member of the Champions Tour, but it falls under the umbrella of the (PGA) Tour.”

Conclusion: Investing in Golf’s Future

Pat Perez’s transition from player to commentator marks a significant change in his life. His experience with LIV Golf has not only shaped his personal journey but also highlighted the complexities of professional golf in the current landscape.

As he looks towards the PGA Tour Champions circuit, Perez remains committed to the sport, whether on or off the green. His shift in career offers valuable insights and perspectives for golf fans and professionals alike.

“I think it’s something I can do for a long time,” he concluded. “I’m excited about the possibilities it brings.”
