The record winner led by star striker Mohamed Salah won the round of 16 against underdog Benin (with GC midfielder Imourane Hassane in the starting lineup) with a lackluster 3-1 after extra time.
Marwan Attia (Al Ahly) gave the big favorites the lead in Agadir, Morocco with a dream goal (69th). Benin’s joker Jodel Dossou equalized and ensured extra time (83′), in which Attia’s club colleague Yasser Ibrahim (97′) and Salah (120’+4) finally scored the tournament favorites a flattering victory.
In the round of the best 8, Egypt will now face defending champions Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso. The two teams will play their round of 16 on Tuesday evening.
Offensive Nigeria trio superior
Nigeria walked effortlessly into the next round. The “Super Eagles” defeated outsiders Mozambique 4-0. The well-known offensive team of Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray), Ademola Lookman (Atalanta) and Akor Adams (Sevilla) single-handedly provided the music.
Osimhen scored twice (25th/47th), before and after that Lookman and Adams were successful. The latter two also shared all 4 assists between themselves.
Nigeria will also find out its next opponent on Tuesday: Algeria and the DR Congo.
