Hope College Women’s Indoor Track and Field Team Shine at Windy City Rumble

Hope College’s women’s indoor track and field team showcased remarkable talent and dedication in a recent competition, emerging as runners-up at the University of Chicago’s Windy City Rumble. The Flying Dutch not only claimed victories in three events but also set season-best times in multiple disciplines, highlighting a year of consistent improvement.

Team Triumphs at University of Chicago

The Flying Dutch dominated the 4×400 relay race, securing a commanding first-place finish. The elite quartet comprised junior Catherine Leahy, sophomore Amanda Markham, junior Frances Cozzens, and junior Sara Schermerhorn. Their synchronized efforts resulted in a winning time of 4 minutes, 10.13 seconds, far surpassing their competitors.

Additionally, individual performances were outstanding. Sara Schermerhorn took first in the 200 meters, marking a season to remember with her winning run of 25.46 seconds. Leslie Leahy also made a significant contribution, placing first in the 400 meters with a time of 59.66 seconds. These victories underscore the team’s powerhouse sprinters.

Setting Season-Best Times

Beyond their wins, the Flying Dutch team registered impressive season-best times in the 800 meters, 5,000 meters, and pole vault, showcasing a well-rounded and versatile lineup of athletes.

One of the standout achievements came from Amanda Markham in the 800 meters, placing second with a time of 2:24.35. Another exceptional performer was Nidia Martinez, who set Hope’s top time in the 5,000 meters with a second-place effort of 19:50.57. Her time demonstrates the team’s depth in distance running.

Abigail Cumings, a sophomore pole vaulter, registered the highest height of the season at 3.06 meters (10 feet, 0-1⁄2 inches). Her performance was good for sixth place, making Cumings’ contribution invaluable in this critical event.

Consistent Team Performance

The Flying Dutch team’s success wasn’t limited to just the event winners. Additional standout performances highlighted the team’s commitment to excellence and sportsmanship.

In the triple jump, Elliana Johnson delivered a runner-up performance with a leap of 10.3 meters (33-9 1⁄2). Another notable triple jumper, Kiersten Schmitt, finished sixth with a jump of 9.95 meters (32-7 3⁄4).

Johnson’s diverse talents were further displayed in the long jump, where she placed fifth with a leap of 5.08 meters (16-8).

Lydia Rowe, a freshman sprinter, secured fifth place in the 60 hurdles, finishing in 10.17 seconds. Cassidy Hart was also a strong contender, placing eighth with a time of 12.55.

Star Freshmans Step Up

It’s noteworthy that numerous freshmen stepped up to the challenge, contributing valuable points to the team. Lily Sackrider and Erin Stuk raced in relays, while Sofia Fisher and Clare Sherman shone in sprint events. Rylie Kraus and Maddie VandeBunte were exceptional in the 5,000 meters and 800 meters races respectively.

Following this successful outing, the Hope College women’s track and field team continues its quest for greatness with another competition on the horizon.
