Vietnam Launches Innovative SMS Reminders to Boost Child Vaccination Rates
VIENTIANE – Laos has taken a significant step in improving its child health care with the launch of a groundbreaking 12-month pilot program. The Ministry of Health has initiated a campaign to send text message (SMS) reminders to parents shortly after their child turns one year old.
WHO-Funded Innovation Supporting Laos
This innovative initiative is backed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and supported by the Australian Government and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The goal is to enhance vaccination coverage and protect children from dangerous but preventable diseases by providing parents with timely reminders via text messages.
Using State-of-the-Art Technology
The SMS reminders will be sent using data from the national Electronic Immunisation Register (EIR), a comprehensive vaccination database introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. This system has recorded more than 515,000 children’s vaccinations nationwide since its deployment in 2024.
Highlighting a First in Laos
This implementation represents the first time that data from the EIR will be utilized to dispatch targeted text messages to parents. The initiative is managed by the Ministry of Health’s National Immunisation Programme and the Centre for Health Statistics and Information.
Official Statements on the Initiative
“These vaccines are vital for protecting children and public health,” stated Deputy Minister of Health Dr Phayvanh Keopaseuth. “Through this pilot program and technological advancements, we aim to improve coverage and ensure more children are safeguarded from vaccine-preventable diseases.”
Australian Embassy’s Support
Australian Deputy Head of Mission, Benita Sommerville, echoed the importance of the program: “Australia is committed to supporting Laos’ efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of its people. This pilot program showcases how technology can enhance immunisation services and protect children from preventable diseases.”
WHO and UNICEF’s Endorsement
WHO Representative to Laos, Dr Tim Armstrong, praised the initiative: “Globally, we have seen the effectiveness of SMS reminders in boosting vaccination rates. If successful, the pilot could be expanded to include other vaccinations and approaches.”
UNICEF’s Country Representative to Laos, Mr Bilal Durrani, added: “This pilot highlights how simple, timely reminders can bridge gaps in immunization coverage, providing parents with vital information to ensure their children receive the necessary protection.”
Details of the Program
Children need two vaccinations shortly after their first birthday: the second dose of the measles and rubella (MR2) vaccine and the second dose of the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV2). Healthcare providers across the country will encourage parents to register their children in the EIR and provide their phone numbers.
Future Prospects
The success of this pilot program could lead to its expansion nationwide, potentially including reminders for additional vaccinations. Leveraging technology in this way could significantly enhance Laos’ ability to protect its young population from vaccine-preventable illnesses.
As this innovative approach continues, it will likely serve as a model for other countries looking to improve their vaccination programs and utilize modern technology for public health benefits.
