Government Launches Ambitious Expansion Plans for IITs and Medical Education
The Union Government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to significantly increase student intake at several educational institutions across India. This move is expected to transform the nation’s educational landscape by enhancing both quality and accessibility.
Boosting IIT Enrolment
A key component of the announcement is the addition of 6,500 new seats across five third-generation IITs—Palakkad, Dharwad, Jammu, Bhilai, and Tirupati—over the next five years. With permanent campuses established recently, these institutions are poised for expansion.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan underscores that these new seats will predominantly be at the undergraduate or B.Tech level. “From merely teaching institutions, the goal for IITs now is to foster a comprehensive ecosystem that includes teaching, research, and innovation,” Pradhan stated.
Medical Education Expansion
In a parallel development, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced the addition of 10,000 new medical seats for undergraduate and postgraduate courses over the next year. This expansion is part of a broader five-year plan aiming to increase the total number of medical seats by 75,000.
The surge in medical education comes after an impressive decade of growth, where the number of MBBS seats grew from 51,384 to 1,12,112, and PG seats from 31,185 to 72,627.
Investment in Research Fellowships
The government also allocates resources to enhance research capabilities, specifically through the PM Research Fellowship scheme. This initiative aims to support 10,000 fellowships over five years at IITs and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), boosting the nation’s research and innovation agenda.
The funding for this fellowship scheme has been raised from Rs. 350 crore in 2024-25 to a substantial Rs. 600 crore in the current financial year.
Overall Education Budget Overview
The total allocation for education in the current year stands at Rs. 1.28 lakh crore, an increase from last year’s Rs. 1.20 lakh crore.
Higher education has seen a modest 5% increase in funding, growing from Rs. 47,619 crore to Rs. 50,077 crore. School education, on the other hand, has received an 8% increase, jumping from Rs. 73,008 crore to Rs. 78,572 crore.
Specific areas within higher education have received significant boosts:
- Indian Knowledge Systems: Allocation has increased fivefold from Rs. 10 crore to Rs. 50 crore.
- National Apprenticeship Training Scheme: Funding has nearly doubled to Rs. 1178 crore from Rs. 600 crore.
- IITs: Investment has risen by approximately Rs. 1,025 crore.
Innovations in School Education
The initiatives in school education are equally notable, with the Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme receiving a substantial hike in funding from Rs. 0.01 crore to Rs. 55 crore.
Another flagship program, PM Schools for Rising India (PM-SHRI), has seen a 24% increase in allocation, while the Samagra Shiksha scheme has recorded a 10% rise.
Atal Tinkering Labs Expansion
Sitharaman also announced plans to set up 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs in government schools over the next five years, aiming to foster scientific temper among young minds.
This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to empowering students with STEM skills. Atal Innovation Mission was introduced in 2016-17, and to date, around 10,000 labs have been established across the country.
The Centre provides funds to schools to establish and maintain these labs, which typically include equipment such as 3D printers and tools to explore aspects of robotics and artificial intelligence.
Conclusion
The comprehensive educational reforms announced by the Government reflect a strong commitment to nation-building through higher education and innovation. By expanding the capacity of existing institutions and introducing new initiatives aimed at nurturing talent, the government is set to catalyze significant progress in multiple fronts.
These investments not only promise to provide more opportunities to students but also to enhance the overall quality of education in the country. As we look towards the future, these steps are expected to lay a robust foundation for India’s journey towards becoming a global knowledge superpower.
