Philippine Coast Guard Issues Strong Warning to China Coast Guard in West Philippine Sea
In a clear statement of sovereignty, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has renewed its warning to the China Coast Guard (CCG) to stay away from Filipino fisherfolk operating in the West Philippine Sea. This comes as the CCG continues its patrol in the area for nearly two months.
Incident Involving BRP Teresa Magbanua and CCG 3304
On January 31, PCG’s 97-meter patrol vessel, BRP Teresa Magbanua, detected CCG 3304 approximately 103 nautical miles from Zambales. A female PCG officer onboard the BRP Teresa Magbanua issued a radio challenge to the CCG vessel, instructing it to maintain a safe distance from Filipino fishing boats.
Assertions of Sovereignty
The officer emphasized that the Philippines holds sovereign rights over these waters, as stipulated by Republic Act 12064, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the 2016 Arbitral Award. This landmark ruling affirmed the Philippines’ right to its 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone and invalidated China’s claims to the entire South China Sea.
Continuous Enforcement of Coast Guard Duties
The Philippines reaffirms its commitment to defending the rights and safety of Filipino fishermen. The PCG has been issuing regular radio challenges to CCG ships that encroach on Filipino waters. During one such encounter, PCG personnel onboard the BRP Teresa Magbanua provided food packs to local fishermen to ensure their well-being.
CCG’s Ongoing Presence
CCG ships have been patrolling near Panatag Shoal, also known as Bajo de Masinloc, since January 4, drawing further attention to the persistent territorial issue in the West Philippine Sea.
PCG’s Stance
Commodore Jay Tarriela, the PCG spokesman on West Philippine Sea issues, stated, “The Philippine Coast Guard remains steadfast in its commitment to protect the rights and welfare of Filipino fishermen and ensure the security of the nation’s exclusive economic zone, all while adhering to international law and avoiding provocative actions.”
Conclusion
This development underscores the continuing complexities and challenges in the ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea. As both nations continue to assert their claims, the safety and rights of local fishermen remain a top priority for the Philippine Coast Guard.
As the situation continues to unfold, it will be crucial to monitor the interactions between the PCG and CCG to ensure that maritime safety and international law are upheld.
