GE HealthCare Invests €132m to Expand Contrast Media Facility in Cork
GE HealthCare has unveiled a substantial €132 million investment aimed at expanding its manufacturing operations in Cork, Ireland. The move positions Cork as a pivotal hub for the production of contrast media—diagnostic imaging agents—widely used in CT scans and X-rays.
New 3000m2 Facility to Meet Growing Global Demand
The expansion includes the construction of a new 3000 square-meter facility adjacent to the existing site in Carrigtwohill. Scheduled to be operational by the end of 2027, this new site will significantly boost production capacity, enabling the manufacture of an additional 25 million patient doses annually. This substantial increase will help meet the anticipated surge in global demand for contrast media driven by aging populations and higher incidences of chronic diseases.

Contrast Media Production’s Crucial Role in Healthcare
Contrast media are injectable substances used to improve the visualization of internal organs, blood vessels, and tissues during medical imaging procedures such as X-rays and CT scans. The demand for iodine-based contrast media, particularly for X-ray, CT, and interventional procedures, is projected to double in the next decade. This growth is attributed to rising healthcare needs worldwide.

He noted the site’s access to top talent, existing distribution networks, and strong support from IDA Ireland. Barrett assured that the first doses from the new facility are scheduled to be available by the end of 2027.

Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland, praised this expansion, viewing it as a recognition of the skilled workforce and capabilities developed over three decades in Cork. “This announcement is an endorsement from GE HealthCare’s senior leadership team of the confidence in the capability and competency of the team at the Carrigtohill campus developed over three decades,” Lohan stated.
Construction and Job Creation
The construction phase will kick off in February 2025, spearheaded by engineering firm IPS-Integrated Project Services. This project is expected to create more than 250 temporary construction jobs. Once operational, the new facility will further cement Carrigtwohill’s position as a leader in global contrast media production.

In 2024, the Carrigtwohill facility, alongside sites in Shanghai, China, and Oslo, Norway, supplied over 100 million patient doses of contrast media worldwide. “This new facility demonstrates our broader commitment not just to address future demand, but also to increase resiliency and security of industry supply for customers,” stated O’Neill.
