NHL Announces Auston Matthews as Team USA Captain for 4 Nations Face-Off

The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced Auston Matthews, the center of the Toronto Maple Leafs, as the captain for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off. This decision comes after a thorough selection process, where the full U.S. hockey operations team and coaching staff deliberated.

Matthews, known for his exceptional scoring abilities and leadership, was chosen over several NHL captains and alternate captains. Alongside Matthews, the assistants will be Matthew Tkachuk of the Florida Panthers and Charlie McAvoy of the Boston Bruins.

Auston Matthews: The Undisputed Choice

Matthews, 27, has had a remarkable career, highlighted by leading the NHL in goals last season and winning the Hart Trophy in 2021-22. He scored a stunning 106 points in just 73 games that year.

The Arizona native is widely recognized as the United States’ top player in the NHL. Since his debut in 2016, he has scored 388 goals and 687 points in 598 career games, more than any other American player during this period.

Matthews was named the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs in August. He is just one goal away from tying Darryl Sittler’s second-place record inteam history, despite having played 246 fewer games than Sittler.

Despite dealing with an upper-body injury most of the season, Matthews met with the U.S. general manager Bill Guerin on Wednesday morning. He expressed confidence in his readiness for the tournament unless a setback occurs.

Matthews’ Return and Recovery

Matthews had a slower start this season with just 11 goals in his first 24 games. He missed nine games in November and then another six from before Christmas until after New Year’s.

Since his return, Matthews has shown signs of recovery, scoring in eight of his last 12 games. He has accumulated 20 goals in 36 games this season, indicating a steady improvement.

This tournament will be Matthews’ first opportunity to represent the United States again since the 2016 World Championships. He has previously won a bronze medal in the 2016 World Junior Championship, and gold at the 2014 and 2015 Under-18 World Championships.

Team USA’s Assistant Captains

The U.S. hockey operations team did not choose between multiple strong nominees easily. Matthews received widespread support, securing a majority of the votes.

Tkachuk, also 27, is a seasoned point-per-game player. He has hit 40 goals twice in his career, making him a formidable offensive force. This season, he has 47 points in 47 games.

Tkachuk has a strong connection with Matthews, having played on the 2016 World Junior Championship team and at the 2015 Under-18 World Championships.

Charlie McAvoy, 27, has been a key player for Team USA in previous tournaments, competing in the 2017 and 2018 World Championships, as well as the 2016 and 2017 World Junior Championship.

In 499 games, McAvoy ranks eighth among Boston Bruins defensemen with 297 points and a plus-146 rating, and tenth with 58 goals. His versatility on both offensive and defensive ice makes him an invaluable asset.

Tournament Details

The 4 Nations Face-Off, an international hockey tournament, will take place from February 12 to 20 in Montreal and Boston. The United States will face Finland on February 13 and Canada on February 15, both games hosted at the Bell Centre.

The final match will be against Sweden on February 17 at TD Garden, with the championship game scheduled for February 20 at the same venue.

This event is organized by the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA), showcasing the best talents from Team USA, Canada, Finland, and Sweden.

Why These Picks?

The selection of Matthews as the captain and Tkachuk and McAvoy as assistants was a collective decision among the U.S. hockey operations and coaching staff. Matthews was chosen based on his status as the NHL’s leading American player and his experience with media attention.

Both Tkachuk and McAvoy are known for their strong leadership qualities on and off the ice. They are ready to motivate their teammates and contribute emotionally.

Tkachuk, with his dual heritage linking him to both the United States and Canada through his father Keith Tkachuk, brings a unique perspective to the team.

McAvoy’s ability to play with skill and passion on both defensive and offensive roles makes him equally important to the success of the team.

Notable Absences

The U.S. roster includes four NHL captains and ten alternate captains. These players represent the highest levels of leadership within some of the NHL’s top teams.

Among these, Jack Eichel, captain of the Vegas Golden Knights, would have been a strong candidate for a third assistant captain. However, the decision was made to consist with the other teams, who only selected two assistant captains.

Eichel’s leadership and contributions to the Vegas Golden Knights, especially in winning the Stanley Cup in 2023, make his absence noteworthy.

Other notable NHL captains and alternate captains who were part of the selection process include Quinn Hughes, Dylan Larkin, and Brady Tkachuk, all known for their exceptional skills and leadership.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off promises to be a showcase of skill and leadership. With Matthews at the helm, the United States will have a potent and charismatic leader on the ice.

The support of Tkachuk and McAvoy, both versatile and experienced, will likely enhance the team’s performance. Their comprehensive abilities and strong leadership make them ideal candidates for assisting Matthews.

Watch out for this tournament to see how these three players guide Team USA to victory in a competitive field.
