Helmut Hubov from Stockach has been the conductor of the Stadtharmonie Winterthur-Töss for twenty years – the club is celebrating this with an anniversary concert.
Free concert “In 2005 we were looking for a new conductor and asked Helmut Hubov, who already had an excellent reputation as the town music director of Stockach, if he could send us a conducting student,” remembers club president Verena Fehr in a personal conversation at her place of work in Grüze.
Like winning the lottery
The following Monday he appeared at the rehearsal and, after a transition period, decided to stay. “For us it was like winning the lottery,” says Fehr. “In all these years we have never gotten bored because Hubov always comes up with new ideas.” And never lose patience with the musicians. Fehr points to the posters hanging on a wall behind her. Hubov first launched the November concerts with top-class instrumental soloists. “It is motivating for our musicians to see what level can be achieved with an instrument.”
First-class urban harmony
Over all the years, the Stadtharmonie Winterthur-Töss has developed from a small neighborhood orchestra to a first-class orchestra and has won several awards in competitions. A highlight was the appearance in front of the Swiss Guard in Rome in 2018. “The association was even granted a papal audience,” says the association president. “With Helmut Hubov we are pushing boundaries.”
According to Fehr, brass music as such has changed positively in the last twenty years. “The selection of good works has become much broader.” This will also be heard at the free anniversary concert. “We offer a low-threshold cultural offering,” says the club president. “We are very much looking forward to honoring our conductor with this anniversary concert.”
