The bus belonging to the Llamosas company left the city of Chala on Tuesday evening and was heading to Arequipa. It is not yet known how many people were traveling in the crashed vehicle, or whether there were tourists among them. Images from the scene of the accident show the wreckage of the bus scattered across the steep terrain, Reuters reported.
Rescuers, firefighters and police rushed to the remote crash site near the 781st kilometer of the highway in Ocoña County. Their goal is to get to the people in the wreckage of a vehicle that crashed into a 200-meter-deep ravine.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, which probably occurred in dense fog. The bad condition of the road may also have contributed to the tragedy.
Accidents in which buses fall off a cliff are quite common in Peru.
