Maurizio Cattelan’s 101-kilogram 18-karat gold toilet titled “America” sold for $12.1 million at an auction at Sotheby’s in New York on Tuesday.
This work, created in 2016 as a satire on extreme wealth, had a asking price of around $10 million.
This is one of two versions made by the Italian artist; the other had been exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum before being stolen from Blenheim Palace, England.
Investigators believe the missing toilet was likely melted. The work up for auction had been exhibited at Sotheby’s before the sale.
