SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Zach LaVine, the newly acquired forward by the Sacramento Kings, has expressed genuine enthusiasm about his upcoming debut against the Orlando Magic.
LaVine’s Dedication to the Kings
LaVine recognizes the importance of connecting with his new fans.
“They take time to come here to watch the game, spending their hard-earned money to cheer us on,” LaVine said at his introductory press conference. “I’m going to be right there with them and do everything I can for the city.”
A Familiar Face
LaVine’s journey with the Kings began before they drafted him in 2014. He worked out for the team before being selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves. LaVine’s family origins trace back to California, and he maintains a home in Newport Beach.
Previous Offer Sheet
In 2018, LaVine showed his interest by signing a four-year, $78 million offer sheet with the Kings, an opportunity that the Chicago Bulls ended up matching.
Shared Roots
LaVine’s connection to Sacramento extends to his coach. Doug Christie, the Kings’ interim coach, is originally from Seattle, sharing LaVine’s Pacific Northwest roots.
“I’ve been a fan of the Kings for a long time,” LaVine commented. “I thought I was going to sign here six years ago. I’ve had a good relationship with a lot of the guys who played here and I understand the culture from being from the West Coast.”
Trade Details
LaVine’s transition to the Kings was part of a complex three-team trade that also involved the San Antonio Spurs. The Bulls received Kevin Huerter and Zach Collins, while the Spurs gained Jordan McLaughlin and Sidy Cissoko, and De’Aaron Fox went to Chicago. Additionally, the Kings welcomed six future draft picks, including three first-round selections.
General Manager’s Praise
Monter McNair, the Kings’ general manager, praised LaVine, describing him as an “incredible talent,” a prolific shooter, and someone who leaves an indelible mark on the court.
LaVine’s Statistics
LaVine’s offensive prowess was evident in his time with the Bulls. He averaged 24 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists over 42 games, shooting an impressive 42.4% from beyond the arc, ranking fifth in the league among active players.
Reuniting with DeMar DeRozan
Joining forces with DeMar DeRozan, who previously played for the Bulls, represents a new opportunity for LaVine to make a significant impact in the Western Conference.
“It just shows you how crazy this business works and how it comes around full circle,” DeRozan expressed. “I am excited for the guys who will play with him and I am excited for the fans to see what he is capable of doing.”
As LaVine prepares for his Sacramento Kings debut, his passion and dedication to honor the team and fans promise an exciting and impactful season.
